Celebrating 20 Years of Well+Good Spray by Bumble and Bumble

It is difficult to find anything better than the look of fresh-salted ocean curls just after stepping off the beach. The combination of wind, warm air, and sea minerals makes beach hair the best hair, IMO. Bumble and bumble really captures that effortless, Blue Crush look. Surf Spray ($24) is the original surf spray. Since then, there’s been a deluge of cool saltwater mists and sprays to hit the market.

The first-of-its-kind saltwater spray by Bumble and bumble made waves in beauty circles 20 years ago (pun totally intended). Its salty, surfer look is still the top dog in the hair care world, despite numerous dupes over the years. c’est la fête! A 20 percent discount off Surf Spray full-size is being offered on the brand’s website, no code (or beach) needed. You only have today to grab a bottle, so don’t wait!

Surf Spray has an interesting origin story. Christiaan Van Bremen, the brand’s education manager, explains that, like so many of Bumble and bumble’s early products, Surf Spray was founded behind-the-scenes on photoshoots and at Fashion Week.

Van Bremen explains that a stylist wanted to create a beach-like look with the hair, but couldn’t find a product that could do it. Our stylists simply sprayed actual seawater in the model’s hair and then diffused it with a blow dry to get that windswept look. But it is so successful that our development team decided to finally turn it into a product.”

Beauty and fashion enthusiasts flocked to that product because of its formulation. Bumble and bumble’s version does not create crunchy or sticky hair. Seaweed and kelp, as well as minerals and saltwater, help add volume and texture to the hair. This lightweight, malleable mist does not encrust strands like other sprays. Instead, it gives hair a breezy, tousled look. The Surf Spray bottle is modeled after a diving accessory, which is a fun fact about the brand. In addition to being made from neoprene, Surf Spray has a scuba tank-shaped bottle made of shiny metal and black neoprene.

The post-dive look is now at your fingertips for 20 percent off! When styling with this briny mist, there’s no wrong way to do it. It takes me only a few seconds to spray it onto my wet head, shake it well, and go. To use it properly, Van Bremen says to apply it to damp or towel-dried hair, as it will distribute more easily.

No matter what kind of product you use, massage it into your hair with your hands before you style it to work it better into the cuticle. “I recommend taking the hair and and twisting it, not super tight, but in loose twists, and then just hitting it gently with the blow dryer. You can ‘jump rope’ the hair, giving it a little bit of movement and swing while you’re hitting it with the airflow. This encourages the hair to take on more of a bend that’s loose and effortless.”

Indeed, effortless. It’s been a year since Surf Spray was established. We appreciate you giving us beach day hair for 20 years, Bumble and bumble. It’ll be a long, long time before we get tired of it.
