Have you ever been in nature and felt the urge to close your eyes and breathe in the fresh air? Similar. Those are all good things, except when they are straight-up unhealthy. The effects of exposure to pollutants are well-established. A yikes-inducing study published in 2019 compared the effects of air pollution to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day over a long period of time.
The Germ Files author Jason Tetro says that there are several clever strategies to improve the air quality inside of your own home as a result of such research. The Tetro Company has four simple recommendations to improve indoor air quality, no matter how big your house is, based on a 2015 scientific review published in Reviews in Environmental Science and Biotechnology.
Improve your home’s indoor air quality
1. Put in a HEPA filter
It is Tetro’s top recommendation for giving your home an anti-pollution makeover to invest in a HEPA filter, which traps airborne particles before you breathe them in. Air purifiers with HEPA technology are available for those looking for a small upgrade. For larger changes, central air systems can be installed directly with HEPA filters.
2. Pick up an Ionic air purifier
The ions they release break down particulates in the air, so they can’t cause problems, says Tetro. A typical ionic air cleaner resembles an air purifier. They have received a lot of controversy in the past (because they emit ozone, a potential pollutant), but generally, they are safe.
3. UV air purifiers are worth the investment
It is a fan that circulates air and uses UV light to make sure nothing survives in it, Tetro says. A few hand dryers use them as well.
4. You should throw open the windows
If you live in an area where air pollution is not a problem, consider this your zero-dollar way to improve the quality of your indoor air. It will dilute out any pollution that may be stagnant inside if you are able to open windows, says Tetro.
