Since the company debuted its Align leggings in 2015, fitness editors have embraced that sink-into-your-skin fabric. However, despite their ease and comfort, these pants don’t necessarily boast the same compression or hold as the other leggings in the Canadian brand’s collection. Lululemon’s newly-launched Instill Tight ($118) builds on Lululemon’s Align leggings with added support and a tightened fit.
A new performance material has also been introduced—the “SmoothCover” from Lululemon. It feels eerily similar to the Align’s Nulu-brushed material, which you are drawn into as soon as you touch it. The Instill, however, takes over where Align left off, so you get the best of both worlds. The comfort of softness meets the compression of solidity. As Lululemon claims, it’s like wearing a “cocoon.” No, I counter.
Thanks to more Lycra in the fabric than its predecessor, it is smoothing and supportive and offers exceptional coverage, while providing the second-skin feeling that we fell in love with from the Nulu pants. It comes in a muted chartreuse, burnt orange, dark taupe, and black color, and has a 25-inch inseam and a high rise (with an extra high rise in the back).
Unlike running tights, the Lululemon yoga pants usually don’t have pockets to store keys, phones, or credit cards. Even though the Instill was designed for yoga, it also contains a handy key pocket, yet another feature that differentiates it from the Align.
I wore these when I walked and did yoga on a couch recovery day. The best descriptor, IMO, is that it’s a stronger Align. Yet, it’s not so strong you want to strip them off and put on sweatpants or something with a little more give. They hit that just-right spot: lived-in softness and comfort, with the perfect amount of held-in support.
