Dr. Cunha recommends looking at the soles of a worn-in pair of shoes to determine your foot type as a general rule. He continues, “The wear pattern reveals where you accumulate pressure while you walk.” You have neutral feet if your shoes are uniformly worn and you walk with “an average gait with equal weight distribution throughout the foot.”
According to Dr. Cunha, persons with a neutral foot need a shoe with moderate to high stability and a balance of cushioning and support. Dr. Cunha says, “A lightweight sneaker that is flexible and can bend and twist more in the centre of the shoe will be sufficient to provide a healthy mix of cushioning and support.”
When looking for your next pair of neutral running shoes, seek for a pair that “present structurally with a flatter sole more uniform throughout without a medial wedge,” according to Dr. Cunha. (To keep the arch from collapsing or rotating inward, a medial wedge is integrated into the shoe under the arch.)
Another recommendation is to buy your running shoes at the end of the day. At the end of the day, gravity has pushed down the fluid in your body, and this is when your feet tend to be the most bloated, so if the shoes are comfortable then, they’ll most likely be comfortable throughout the day, he says.
