It’s easy to forget about plain old cow’s milk these days, with so many (many) alternative milks on the market. The vegan milk revolution has been amazing, allowing individuals who can’t digest dairy (or choose to live a life free of animal products) to enjoy lattes, ice cream, cheese, and everything else that would otherwise be off-limits to them.
While other alternative milks have their own set of nutritional benefits, cow’s milk is still the finest source of calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin D in milk. Nearly half of all Americans do not get enough of the latter nutrient. That’s significant since vitamin D is essential for maintaining a strong immune system, digestive health, and even cancer prevention. If you want to obtain enough vitamin D but don’t want to drink cow’s milk, there’s a new alternative milk (yeah, another one) on the market that has even more vitamin D than cow’s milk: Hope & Sesame milk.
This new alternative is produced from sesame seeds, as you could have guessed from the name. When asked why the world needs yet another vegan milk alternative, Julia Stamberger, founder and CEO of Spinning Wheel Brands (Hope & Sesame’s parent company), says it’s because most of the options out there are nutrient-deficient, largely created with water and sugar. “Each serving of Hope & Sesame sesame milk contains all nine essential amino acids, eight grammes of complete plant-based protein, is an excellent source of vitamin D, and is a good source of calcium—all while containing less sugar than dairy milk,” she says, adding that it’s also free of the seven most common allergens (including nuts). Sesame milk offers a complete 50 percent of the daily recommended dose of vitamin D in one drink. One serving of 2% cow’s milk, on the other hand, contains 15% of the daily recommended value.
In addition to sesame seeds, pea protein is added to the sesame milk, bringing the total protein level to eight grammes per serving. “Vegan and plant proteins, on the other hand, are frequently inadequate on their own and must be paired suitably to form a full protein. For this reason, many societies, for example, eat rice and beans together “According to Stamberger. “We were able to lengthen the amino acid chain in sesame to create a complete protein with a balance of all nine necessary amino acids by including pea protein in our sesame milks.”
Nutrition expert Sharon Palmer, RD (who is fully associated with the brand) says Hope & Sesame milk holds up nutritionally. “Blending sesame seeds with pea protein gives it a protein content that’s comparable to cow’s milk,” she explains. “It’s also high in healthful fats and a rich source of iron, both of which are essential in plant-based diets.” She goes on to say that the high vitamin D and calcium levels of the clients were also notable.

Stamberger claims that, in addition to being nutritionally good, the company prioritised sustainability when developing the milk. “Planet-friendly sesame thrives in dry locations with minimal water, supports low-input and rotational farming practises, is naturally pest-resistant, and can self-pollinate, so assisting in bee population conservation,” she explains.
